Hey Tom, Something looks wrong with my week 10 picks. The player summary page shows different than my player picks page. Since I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have picked against Denver, I'm assuming that the Summary is right. The pool is *ON!* Forgive the delay; I was late in prepping the site, and awaiting feedback from Beta testers, but only 50% of them ever responded to me, and she only did so this afternoon. In any case, the Rowell Pool is up and running at the usual location. It's (almost) always a good idea to start at http://pool.tastewar.com as that should always bring you to the current week's pool pages. Note that I tend to make the cutover on Tuesday morning. The "button bar" near the top is your best friend for navigation within the site. Home will bring you to the home page for the current week; the Last Week/Next Week buttons should take you to the site for those weeks. Note that the Next Week button will only bring you joy if you are already looking at a week from the past. It's like a Time Machine, but it can't actually go into the future. The buttons are smart enough to cross season boundaries, but only this season and last season have the smarter buttons. If you go back further than that, the buttons were just hardcoded to particular pages. The Archive button will bring up a looooooong list of all the weeks from all the seasons that we have on file. There *were* seasons prior to those, but at the time I was overwriting the same site every week, so aside from the trophy, and various peoples' foggy memories, those results are lost to the sands of time. The *Most Important Button*, however, is the *Enter My Picks* button. I've made one change to the mailing list configuration this year. If you simply *Reply* to a message, it will now *only* go to the original sender. If you wish to reply to the list, you either need to *Reply All* or change the recipient on your reply to be players at pool.tastewar.com whereas previously a reply would always go to the entire list. Please remember to submit your picks prior to kickoff, which should be about 8:35 tonight. If you're not planning to participate this season, please let me know, and I can remove you from the mailing list. Also, I will be inclined to remove people from the standings if I don't see any picks and don't hear from you for about 3 weeks. Also remember, this is a lot more fun (well, for me anyway...) if there's good-natured banter on this channel :-) Finally, it is true that there is a "deadline" on submitting your picks, because that makes it fair for everyone. I don't publish anyone's picks until after the deadline, so nobody can base their picks on someone else's ("I just need to get *one* game right that Frank get's wrong!"). However, I am generally benevolent in this area, and if you email or phone in your picks after the deadline (or before!) I will take *at least* those picks that represent games that haven't started yet. Good luck everyone! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have a new receiver, Emmanuel Sanders, with Welker-like numbers for many years with the Steelers. Curious mathematics: Suspensions include practices and hanging out with the team. The Broncos have an early bye (week 4). So the four game suspensions cover *5 weeks*. So the players have to forfeit 5/17th's of their salary (29.4%) instead of 4/17th's or 23.5%. That's a big difference when multiplied by millions of dollars. Is that fair? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Works pretty well. Tom's formula survives the above. My casual approach continues unproductive and frustrating. Knowshon Moreno wreaks havoc for Miami. So, will his replacement at Denver do the any less against Miami's victim team? [?] The Broncos play one strong half, and survive the second. We'll take it. Univ. of Colorado (CU) always likes to play big name teams out of their league. Last year they joined the PAC-12 and got pounded. So in this years 'preseason' the Denver sports press is discouraged that CU trailed most of the game, and barely beat "the woeful Minutemen of UMass" at Foxborough Saturday. It's CU that is woeful. I heard a news item that the combining of the states of Nebraska and Colorado is being considered. Nebraska would get mountains, and Colorado would get a (college) football team. In truth, not only can I not remember Wes Welker, I actually do not know who is playing for the patriots now, except for Brady and Wilfork. There are so many new names each week, I just cheer for who ever shows up in a patriots uniform and catches a ball or makes a tackle. With Ridley out and Mayo out, there will be even more new faces this week. As for the other matter, I was just listening to a report this weekend on NPR about Delusional Disorder where someone believes in a marginally plausible delusion so completely, that there is absolutely no way to reason or persuade them otherwise. Medication is only slightly helpful. Where a peaceful approach is available, it can be best to placate the individual. So, Luke, you really are just making masterful picks this season, and when you hear us all praising Flo for her skill and success, you can just read that as you see fit. Love you! I can't promise to do this every week but thought I might go over it little by little anyway. Let's start with the Toolbar: From the left, we have the following buttons: *Home*: takes you to the "front" page for the week you're viewing *Last Week/Next Week*: these are my favorites (thanks Michael!!). These buttons will help you go through our vast archive of past seasons and weeks. For the past couple of seasons, these buttons have some Magic to them, which is that they will keep you on the same relative page as you travel through time. That means if you're on a "Detailed Standings" page and you click Last Week it will take you directly to the previous week's detailed standings page. Magic! The buttons will cross season boundaries, too, at least as far back as when the enhanced ones were first implemented. Enjoy these two! *Archive*: this takes you to a large, plain index page that gives you easy access to any particular week's site, as far back as we have them archived. *Enter My Picks*: presumably, this is familiar. It takes you to the pick sheet. *Rules*: takes you to a page where the rules are printed. You can also see these on the home page. *Reports*: takes you to a page listing all of the reports. Also available directly on the home page *Contact Us*: an email link to the poolmaster -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In the four games the Patriots played following the debacle in Kansas City, Brady went 100-for-144 for 1,268 yards, 14 touchdowns and no interceptions and a quarterback rating of 129.1. Brady had a pair of 300-yard passing games in the month, including a brilliant performance against the Bears this past Sunday in which he went 30-for-35 for 354 yards and five touchdowns. Brady’s 14 touchdown passes were tied for the most in the NFL for October (matching Peyton Manning) and he was the only starting quarterback not to throw an interception for the month. Prior to this four-game stretch, Brady had just four touchdowns in the first four games of the season and had two interceptions. He averaged less than 200 yards passing per game, as opposed to 317 in the four games since. The Patriots averaged 39.5 points per game in October and rattled off four straight wins during that span. The Patriots jumped from 24th in to third in points-per-game over that span and are averaging 29.8 PPG for the season. *Brady has now earned AFC Offensive Player of the Month honors seven times. *This is his first such honor since December/January of 2011. Thanks for all the "fun" pictures! And many thanks to the Lucarelli's for hosting the annual Pats-beat-Broncos party. We had a *stellar* time -- excellent company, great food, and a memorable performance by the NFL's best team of the last nn years ;-) Anyway... The results from week 9 have been posted since the MNF game finished. Susan and I saw none of the game, though, as we were up late working on some updates to the web site for a charitable cause she's been working on -- Arlington EATS -- please check it out, and feel free to "test" (ahem, *use*...) the new Donate button, even if you're not an Arlington, MA resident. We won't hold it against you. This week: first game is Thursday night, per usual; please submit your picks before 8:30 that night. On Sunday, there is yet another UK game, though my calendar shows it at 1:00 p.m. anyway. Presumably, it's a night game there, if that's correct. *Get to Know your Web Site* This week's featured section is the Top Players section: This can be a little confusing because I try to make it ever relevant. So, if I remember to do the things I intend to do, at the beginning of the Football Week (Tuesday a.m. thru Thursday p.m.) this should be displaying the season standings. After that, I prefer to switch to displaying *current* standings for the week. Hopefully, that means that a lot of the time, the information you're looking for is actually on the home page. But I know it can also be confusing to have it change. Please know this -- I *do* change it, generally twice a week as outlined above -- so you should *always* be looking at the section title to know what's being displayed currently. Cheers! Message-ID: Hello Pool Pals! Hope you all had a Merry Christmas, or any other holiday you choose/chose to celebrate! Here are some stats/awards from the season that was. Starting with the obvious: *Family Winner*: Tom *Friends Winner*: Flo The tradition here is that the current trophy holder gets the trophy engraved for the new winner and passes it along (by mail, if not in the same town) And the less obvious: *Best Pick %*: Ken (68%); runner-up: Jacob (65%); honorable mention: George and Flo (64%) *Most Consistent Scorer*: David K with an average of 11.471 pts/wk and a standard deviation of 1.576 *Most Consistent Placer*: Ken with an average place of 5.529 and a standard deviation of 3.55 *Most Weeks at #1 for the week*: George and Tom (4) *Most Weeks in top 3 for the week*: Ken and Flo (8) *Most Correct Upsets*: Tom (51) *Highest % of points from upsets*: David K (34.5%) *Genius*: Ben (3 genius picks); runners-up Tyler, Donna, Emma (2) It's funny (to me, anyway) to look back at the season because the stats reveal things I didn't think about, or remember correctly. I remember being on top of the season standings a fair amount, but I didn't realize it was all but week 6, when Flo and I swapped places. What I *do* remember is a number of weeks when Flo was at the top of the board after the early games, but I was able to catch up in the late games. I also didn't quite remember that Flo was in 2nd place all but 3 weeks this year: week 1, when she was in 6th, week 6 when (as mentioned earlier) she did make 1st place, and week 12 when she sank all the way to 3rd place. 3rd place was dominated by Ken after week 6, which he only failed to maintain in week 12, when he swapped places with Flo! (see the pattern? ;-) ) Anyway, that's what struck me from looking back at the Season Standings board over the course of the year. Here are a couple of graphs that show these standings over the season. They are in PNG format, so you should be able to download them and look at them "bigger" if desired. Enjoy! --Your friendly neighborhood poolmaster :-) P.S. If you've been looking at the data and have your own award nominations, please share them (it's OK to nominate yourself)! Also, if you want the spreadsheets that I laboriously imported the data from the pool into for these analyses, let me know and I'll pass them along. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... His method is clearly superior though as Dusty has alluded to it demonstrates the futility of thinking. I also want to praise my wife Flo for being such a good student by learning all my skills, which when combined with her luck kept the friends trophy in its rightful place. I am delighted that she won ( my roman nose just grew an inch) as the Arlington Massachusetts Lucarellis will be added to the friends trophy for the 4th time! I note with pride that the Plano Texas Lucarellis( brother Pete, sister-in-law Judy and nephew Mark) also competed this season with Flo and me, using Tom’s pick sheet. Mark finished with 214 points which is amazing. Finally the evident power of prayer as I defeated Flo’s biggest supporter, Susan. It’s something I have done several times before but it’s still so sweet to do it by coming from behind on the final day and the final game and winning by one point! As they will say soon about Denver there is always next year Susan. Happy new year to all from the GLOATER! And I have proved again the futility of winging it with no research at all. Yes let's do the playoff pool. Then I can get 8 points for the game that spoils Emma's birthday. One scenario would have the Broncos playing Cincinnati, New England and Seattle, beating all three in the playoffs and SuperBowl after losing to all three in the regular season. Has that ever happened before?
